The UK’s leading broadcast and mobile communications infrastructure provider, Arqiva Limited, has appointed Daly International to provide deployment services for its ‘City Cell’ wireless network solution throughout the UK.
‘CityCell’ is designed specifically with aesthetic concerns in mind and used a discrete, low-powered distributed antenna system for creating a single urban network that all 2G and 3G providers can share. Antennas are typically installed on existing street furniture such as lamp posts and CCTV columns, but can be attached to walls if necessary. ‘CityCell’ simultaneously addresses the need for increased coverage and capacity while potentially reducing the number of masts, antennas and dishes in urban, street-level environments.
The Daly International team is currently responsible for site identification, acquisition, town planning, design and installation services for the deployment of node and equipment “hotel” sites in the UK city centres of Cardiff, Bristol and Bath. Arqiva has plans to deploy ‘City Cell’ nationwide.
Susan McMorrow and Nigel Smith from Daly International are managing project delivery through close liaison with Arqiva and Local Authorities’ planning and highways departments in the identification of suitable site locations and the choice of street furniture for deployment.
An example of a typical City Cell deployment is shown below.
